Accreditation Renewal made simple for New Zealand Employers

Step-by-step 2025 guide for Accreditation renewal. Stay compliant and keep your team secure with People Inc Group.

Renewing your Employer Accreditation doesn’t have to be stressful. The key is knowing what’s changed, what’s required, and when to start.
The hard part is finding the time to do it properly while running a business.

Every year, we see employers rush their renewal in the final weeks and wish they’d started earlier. The good news is, a few weeks of preparation now can save months of delay later. Here’s what you need to know about Accreditation Renewal and how to get it right the first time.

What changed for Accredited Employers in 2025

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) introduced key Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) reforms from 10 March 2025 that also affect accreditation renewals:

  • Median-wage rule removed. Employers must now pay at or above the market rate for each role. This gives you more flexibility, but it also means you’ll need solid evidence of current pay rates when you renew.
  • Sector agreements ending. Exemptions that allowed lower pay rates under the median wage are being phased out. If you’ve relied on a sector agreement, you’ll need to review all pay rates to ensure they meet the new standard.
  • Experience requirement reduced. For AEWV applications submitted on or after 10 March 2025, most roles will require at least two years of relevant experience instead of three. It may become easier to fill roles, but you must still confirm that candidates meet the new minimum before you submit.
  • Longer AEWV terms. Qualifying ANZSCO 4 and 5 roles can now be approved for up to three years. Longer terms reduce turnover and visa renewal costs, helping you plan workforce stability. More info here.
  • Job Check redesign. INZ is simplifying the Job Check stage under a new framework. Job Check requirements may seem simple, but accuracy is still crucial: a minor error can delay your entire application.
  • National Occupation List (NOL). Expected in November 2025, the NOL will redefine which roles are eligible for the AEWV. Keep an eye on updates before recruiting, as eligibility for some positions could change.

These changes mean renewals should move faster for well-prepared employers,  but can still stall if documentation, pay details, or HR records don’t match current criteria.  You can read more at VisaAide: AEWV Changes 2025.

When to renew accreditation, and what type do you need?

Immigration New Zealand offers three types of accreditation under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) programme.
Your renewal type depends on how your business has evolved since your last accreditation. A quick check now prevents a bigger admin job later:

Accreditation type
Who it’s for
Duration

DETAILS

Standard Accreditation

Employers hiring up to 5 migrant workers at a time.

Up to 24 months (on renewal)

Ideal for small to medium-sized businesses with limited overseas recruitment.

High-Volume Accreditation

Employers hiring 6 or more migrant workers at a time.

Up to 24 months (on renewal)

Designed for growing or larger employers who recruit regularly.

Triangular Accreditation

Labour hire or outsourcing companies that place migrants with third parties.

12 months

Stricter obligations around worker support and monitoring.

The Accreditation Renewal process

  • Confirm that you still need accreditation.
You’ll need it if you plan to hire new migrants, renew existing AEWV visas, or support residence pathways.
  • Select the right accreditation level.
Choose standard, high-volume, or triangular based on your expected migrant numbers.
If your business has grown, upgrade now rather than submitting a new application later.
  • Log in to Immigration Online.
Use your RealMe login and go to “My Accredited Organisations.”
  • Upload complete documentation.
Double-check that everything matches your current operations. Include the following:
    – Current financial statements and business records
    – Proof you’re following NZ employment law
    – HR policies and employment agreements
    – Updates to the company structure or ownership
This is where most renewals stall, not because employers get it wrong, but because they run out of time.
Set aside an hour to review every document before submitting; it’s the simplest way to keep your renewal moving.
  • Pay the correct fee.
Fees vary by accreditation type; confirm with Immigration NZ
  • Respond quickly to any INZ requests.
If INZ asks for clarification or extra information, reply within days, not weeks. Fast responses keep your file moving.
  • Check for approval and save confirmation.
If you renew before your accreditation expires, the new term will begin immediately after your current term ends.
  • Keep everything aligned after renewal.
Make sure job ads, pay rates, and employment contracts continue to match what you submitted during Job Checks and accreditation.

Common Renewal mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Starting late
Impact: Accreditation expires and hiring halts.
How to prevent: Begin your renewal at least three months in advance.
  • Missing or outdated documents
Impact: Immigration NZ asks for clarification and delays approval.
How to prevent: Use a renewal checklist and double-check every upload before submitting.
  • Wrong accreditation type
Impact: You may outgrow your approval limit.
How to prevent: Review your hiring forecast before selecting your tier.
  • Ignoring 2025 rule changes
Impact: Pay or Job Check requirements may fall out of compliance.
How to prevent: Update your internal HR templates and policies early.
  • Slow email responses
Impact: Weeks added to processing and unnecessary delays.
How to prevent: Nominate one renewal contact with authority to reply promptly.

A small delay in preparation can cause months of downtime. Treat renewal like any other essential business deadline.
